What happens if you miss your insurance renewal in Czechia?
· 4 min read

A missed renewal is not a disaster, but it is worth fixing fast. What actually happens when a policy ends, what a police check can mean, and what to do if you are already past the date.
You looked at your calendar and the date has passed. Firstly, do not panic. A missed renewal happens to many people, and it is fixable. But it is better fixed this week than next month, and here is why.
Short answer
- Your cover stops on the end date. Insurance policy terms say that the cover ends at 24:00 on the end date and that services used outside the policy period are not paid.
- The Ministry does not normally chase your end date. But the authorities can look it up, and a police check is where it can matter.
- You cannot rely on buying insurance for the months that already passed. Avoid a gap, or close it as soon as you notice it.
- If you are past the date, act now. Contact us and we can arrange the renewal in under 30 minutes. Go to the application page.
What happens on the day the policy ends
Nothing renews by itself. From the next day you are uninsured: if you need a doctor, you pay the bill yourself, and a condition that starts in the gap can later count as pre-existing under your next policy (how a policy starts and ends).
Who can see it
Insurers report foreigners' travel health policies to a central register run by the Czech Insurers' Bureau, and the law lets the Ministry of the Interior and the police receive that data (Act 278/2023). So the date can be looked up if someone wants to. In everyday practice, a missed end date is not something the Ministry follows up on its own.
When it can matter: a police check
The risk is a residence check by the police when you have no valid policy. For a visa for a stay over 90 days, the Act on the Residence of Foreigners allows the visa to be cancelled if you cannot show proof of insurance at a police residence check, even within the period the police give you (§ 37 para. 2 letter f, the Act). A similar ground exists for family-reunification permits. A check can also end in a fine.
This is a specific situation, not something that happens to everyone who forgets. We do not give a fine amount here, because we could not find an official source that ties a figure to this case. If you have been checked or fined, bring us the paper and we will look at it with you.
What to do if you already missed it
- Do not wait for a better moment. Every day without a policy is a day without cover.
- Contact us. Tell us your permit type and the date your last policy ended. We arrange the renewal in under 30 minutes.
- Keep the old policy document and the new one together, in case anyone asks about the gap.
- If you have an extension coming up, tell us the date, so the policy is in place before you file.
- If you were checked by the police, send us what you were given.

Short FAQ
Will my visa be cancelled if I forgot to renew?
Not automatically. The law allows cancellation in specific cases, such as failing to show proof of insurance at a police check, so the sooner you close the gap, the better.
Can I get a policy for the months I missed?
Do not count on it. Where an insurer allows a start date in the past, it comes with a declaration and the waiting periods still start after signing.
Is my new policy the same as a renewal?
No. A new contract starts its own waiting periods. That is why it is best to renew before the old one ends.
Hero's tips
- Put the end date in your calendar a month ahead. Nothing renews by itself, and the cover stops at 24:00 on the end date.
- Start the new policy the day after the old one ends. A new contract has its own waiting periods, so renewing before the old one ends is better than starting over after a gap.
- If the date has already passed, do not wait for a better moment. A condition that begins in the gap can later count as pre-existing, and we can arrange a new policy in under 30 minutes.
- Keep the old and the new policy documents together. If the police ask about the gap, or you are checked, send us what you were given and we will look at it with you.
